About WIM3

Women in McHenry County (WIM3) – formerly known as Women in Management – is a 501(c)(7) non-profit community based networking and mentoring organization for women.  Membership includes women from all professional areas including licensed professionals, entrepreneurs (product or service), nonprofit, corporate government and academics.  Since 1976 the organization has provided educational and mentoring opportunities to its members, award achievement recognition, and educational scholarships for challenged women.

History

Women in Management, Inc. began in January of 1976 as the brainstorm of a North suburban Chicago Chamber of Commerce committee whose goal was to “identify and suggest table topics for short-term one shot seminars, workshops or conferences that would be useful to businesses and industries in the area”.  During the meeting, the suggestion was made to provide some type of support organization for the many women entering management, as well as for those women already in management positions.

This idea was put into effect in the spring of 1976 with a series of three luncheons for women executives and managers to provide an opportunity for these women to meet and participate in a short program focused on the concerns of their professional lives.  At the June meeting, five of the women present volunteered to assume responsibility for forming a permanent independent group for management women.

With a nucleus of five volunteers, the organization to later be known as Women in Management was formed.  The first official meeting of the new group was help on October 21, 1976 at the Fireside Inn, Morton Grove, Illinois.  This was the origin of the North Shore Chapter.  Membership soon topped 100, and the word spread that this was an excellent support and sharing organization for management-level women.  Charlotte Danstrom was one of the founding members of WIM.  She developed the WIM logo and was a driving force in the promotion and growth of the organization.  After her untimely death in an accident, WIM honored her posthumously with the annual Charlotte Danstrom Women of Achievement Award.

In 2011, the National organization dissolved leaving each chapter to be their own sole entity.  In 2013, the McHenry Chapter, went under a restyling and changed its name and  logo in an effort to expand its reach to women in McHenry County.  Today, WIM3 has 20+ members and growing.
